The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) is the national professional organization for Certified Public Accountants in the United States. It sets auditing standards (along with other bodies), provides guidance, ethics frameworks, and supports CPA education and professional development.

What “CPA Candidate” means

A CPA Candidate is someone who is actively working toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by completing the requirements to sit for and pass the CPA Exam and meet licensing requirements set by a state board (such as education, experience, and ethics).

A CPA Candidate is typically:

  • Approved to sit for the CPA Exam (or in progress of eligibility)

  • Taking or preparing for the four CPA Exam sections:

    • Auditing & Attestation (AUD)

    • Financial Accounting & Reporting (FAR)

    • Regulation (REG)

    • Discipline-specific section (BAR, ISC, or TCP under the new exam model)

Important clarification (common misunderstanding)

  • The AICPA does not license CPAs

  • CPA licensure is granted by state boards of accountancy (for example, California Board of Accountancy, etc.)

  • The AICPA helps administer and develop the CPA Exam, but the license comes from the state
